Consolatio Solitudinis
(The Comfort of Solitude, 2021-22)
One justifies writing for computer-controlled piano (Disklavier) by writing faster music than humans can play. But now that I have come to accept that the Disklavier will be my primary medium for the foreseeable future (performers not being interested in my music), I decided it was time to afford myself the luxury of a slow Disklavier piece. The basic material is repeated lines in different tempos, covering several octaves, going out of phase with each other, as in my three-Disklavier piece Geometry, though here in conventional twelve-pitch tuning. Since I wrote this piece only for my own enjoyment, I have appropriated a dedication from Erik Satie: "Je me dedie cette oeuvre" (I dedicate this work to myself).
