for cello, vibraphone, and piano
Commissioned by House on Fire

Years ago I saw, and saved, a photograph of the city of Trieste, Italy, which, along with the perceived tristesse of the name, made me think of the city as magical, and made me long to be there. Later, in 2023, I was invited for a concert and residency in Krems an der Donau, Austria, and I convinced my wife to add a side-trip to Trieste for a week's vacation beforehand. In the meantime I was asked by Adam Zuckerman to write a piece for his trio House on Fire. I started writing the piece as an homage to a mythical city that filled me with longing and melancholy. After much sketching I paused it to write my Second Piano Concerto (which shares some of the same material as this piece). Then we visited Trieste, which is indeed a magical place, though, of course, rather different, livelier and less melancholy, than the city of my imagination. I then completed the piece in Krems on an AIR Neiderosterreich residency. Trieste ended up being, in effect, a musical depiction of tourism, European architecture, echoes of history - a wandering piece fascinated by one thing after another.
